ABOUT
Cameron Highlands is located in the state of Pahang, north of Kuala Lumpur and on the east side of the border between the states of Perak and Pahang in Malaysia. At about 1,500 metres above sea level, Cameron Highlands Resort is nestled on a verdant plateau amidst tea plantations and rolling hills. This tranquil boutique hideaway promises an experience infused with the splendour, romance and nostalgia of a grand colonial heritage.
Cameron Highlands was named after William Cameron, a British Government surveyor who discovered it in 1885 whilst on a mapping expedition. However, he failed to mark his discovery and it was not until 1925 that Sir George Maxwell recorded Cameron’s discovery and decided to develop it as a hill resort.
The fame of Cameron Highlands grew during the colonial era. British colonials were attracted to this cool hill station, its climate tailor-made for nostalgic reconstructions of English cottages, narrow village lanes, invigorating hikes through the countryside, rounds of golf and afternoon tea and scones accompanied by locally produced strawberry jam.
British expatriates would frequent the highlands on vacation, to relax and escape the lowland tropical heat, and British planters soon realised the potential of its fertile mountain slopes for growing tea, then a prized commodity. Cameron Highlands is still home to many tea plantations as well as strawberry and vegetable farms, jungle trails, cascading waterfalls and rose gardens. Much of the highlands’ character remains unchanged, exuding an old English charm.
LIFESTYLE
Set amidst tea plantations and rolling hills, the stately Cameron Highlands Resort is a luxurious, boutique hotel exuding colonial charm. Timber-beamed ceilings, fireplaces and vast leather couches offer a warm ambience while tall French doors and plantation shutters open to reveal breathtaking vistas of undulating hills. Beautifully appointed, the accommodation recalls the luxury of a bygone era by combining the elegance of four-poster beds and warm timber floors with the wondrous colours and textures of Jim Thompson’s famed Asian silks.
The resort pays homage to Jim Thompson, the American famous for revitalising the Thai silk industry, whose mysterious disappearance in 1967 is still a conversation piece. A complimentary jungle trek for guests loosely explores the area in which Jim Thompson vanished, though its main focus is on the forests of Cameron Highlands which host a variety of exotic flora and fauna that dramatically change with the mountain’s profile.
The verdant tea gardens that cover the highlands’ mountain slopes have been skilfully woven into the resort; especially at the award-winning Spa Village with signature treatments inspired by the restorative properties of tea and the local healing culture of the indigenous orang asli tribes. Guests may enjoy a round of golf, pink-cheeked rambles along the variety of guided nature trails, indulge in a picnic amidst lush tea plantations or a leisurely walk through rose gardens and strawberry farms.
