Stilt Studios Are Bali’s Latest Eco-Friendly Prefabricated Homes
Stilt Studios, developed by Bali-based architect, Alexis Dornier, are an innovative variation of the atypical prefab house. Balanced on stilts, the house can be erected in a variety of different locations without causing significant damage to the natural landscape.
Following the principles of a circular economy, prefab homes reuse and recycle products and materials for as long as possible, eliminating potential waste pollution and ensuring that all natural environments are restored to their initial state.
As a direct solution to Bali’s land-leasing issues whereby residents legally own plots for a limited duration of time, before being forced to relocate, Stilt Studios currently incorporate steel framework for durability, large overhanging design to minimize solar-heat gain, rainwater harvesting systems, cross ventilation and energy-generating solar panels.
With long-term ambitions to become increasingly environmentally friendly, Stilt Studios aim to utilize cross-laminated timber (CLT) and an agricultural system in their developments – which will allow residents access to home-grown food. CLT refers to layers of solid-sawn lumber glued together, forming wooden panels which are predominantly used for columns, beams and truss elements.
As of now, the very first Stilt Studio will be constructed for Dornier and his construction team, while they develop a series of typologies and facades in customizable shapes and material to serve a range of uses. Stilt Studios will be available to the public in the near future.
